Ensure a Lifetime of Smiles with Proper Denture Care
Dentures can’t match your natural teeth’s quality. While its appearance can be similar to your teeth, it’s made of acrylic that can only withstand certain degrees of pressure. Over time, it can break, crack, or misalign.
So while you are adjusting to your new pair of prosthetic teeth, here are a few things you can do to maintain your dentures, and perhaps prolong their life.
How to Keep Your Dentures in Great Shape
Do this for the first 24 hours of getting your dentures. This will allow your mouth to adjust.
Leave Your Dentures On 
As you brush your remaining teeth, clean your dentures with cold or warm water and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Clean Them Regularly 
If you’ve been using dentures for a few days now, remove your dentures before going to bed. Soak them in cold or warm water overnight.
Soak Them Overnight 
When you can already remove your dentures at night, remember to rinse them before wearing them again in the morning.
Rinse Them Before Wearing 
Dentures are not as efficient as natural teeth, so be extra careful with the food you’re eating, especially when you’re still adjusting.

Wear Your Dentures
Remove your dentures and brush them twice daily, with a soft toothbrush. You can use soap and water or even toothpaste. At this time also brush your remaining teeth, or gums if you have no teeth left. It is also important to brush your tongue!
Clean Them Regularly
Plaque and tartar will build up on your dentures over time. Getting in the habit of soaking them in a denture cleanser at least once a week, if not more, can greatly reduce the amount of build up on them. Make sure to brush your dentures well after soaking them.
Soak Them Weekly
Before putting your dentures in, wetting them can help them go in easier. It is also a good idea to rinse your partial dentures after eating. This will help get rid of any food stuck in or around them.
Rinse Them Before Wearing
Dentures are not locked into the bone like natural teeth. So sticky foods can cause them to come out of the mouth. It is a good idea to eat soft foods until you are used to your dentures.
Eat Softer and Non-sticky Foods
Things to Avoid with Your Dentures
- Harmful Chemicals : When cleaning your dentures, do not use bleach or any household chemicals! It is best to use cleaning agents made specifically for dentures or teeth.
- Teeth Whitening Products : Your dentures do not need bleach and other whitening components. Rather than “whitening” the teeth, discoloration would take place, affecting both false teeth and their metal bridges.
- Abrasive Cleaning Materials : Only use soft-bristled toothbrushes, and do not brush too hard. Remember that if you brush too hard, you can wear your dentures down prematurely.
- Sharp Objects : Objects like metal toothpicks or dental scrapers can easily damage your dentures. Refrain from using these.
